There was a time I was down, down
I didn’t know what to do
I was just stumbling around, around
Thinking things could not improve
I couldn’t look on the bright side
I feel better – Gotye*
On Friday afternoon I adopted a ginger kitten. Five minutes after arriving in my apartment, he managed to knock over two pot plants, leaving behind a thick layer of soil on my cream carpet. He was thus christened, Havoc.
On Sunday morning, Havoc escaped from my fourth-floor apartment. I sent out pictures of my cat to various animal shelters and veterinary clinics, quizzed my neighbours, and stopped short of offering the local bergies a “papsak” as a reward for finding my kitten.
Later I would retell the story of my disappearing kitten to colleagues.
Me: And even if someone did find him, I’ve had him for such a short time that I wouldn’t be able to recognize him … The only thing I would be able to recognize is the fear in his eyes.
I might not have a kitten, but at least I still have my sense of humour.
*Other cool Gotye songs from the album, Making Mirrors are: Save me and Giving me a chance.

Aaaw man, that’s terrible. Sorry you couldn’t find Havok. If you decide to get another cat might I suggest going to DARG in Hout Bay?
